It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside University Hospitals of North Midlands over recent months to ensure the first phase installation of their new maternity system went without a hitch. It is now with great delight that K2 welcome UHNM to the forefront of healthcare innovation as they begin to reap the benefits from K2’s electronic patient record solution, Athena™, the UK’s only fully paperless end-to-end maternity system.
Designed for the ultimate in clinical utility, and offering a new approach to the traditional methods of data collection and monitoring, Athena™ has been developed to provide an innovative and clinically focussed approach to the compilation and accessibility of electronic patient notes. Putting the clinician-patient interaction first and foremost, and by integrating seamlessly with K2MS Guardian™ fetal monitoring system, medical devices and processes, Athena™ offers the complete maternity management strategy able to collect detailed patient information from the initial booking in the community, through screenings, investigations, labour, delivery and postnatal care. By providing instant traceability and accessibility to CTGs, results and all patient notes, Athena™ promotes patient safety and provides all vital records contemporaneously and at the point of care; supporting and empowering both staff and patients to reduce the risk of error and poor birth outcomes.
K2 are delighted with the response received from UHNM as they have fully embraced Athena™ and have already recognised the benefits this system will bring. They have chosen to invest in what is, without doubt, an exceptional, comprehensive and unrivalled maternity system; the only truly paperless end-to-end maternity system available in the UK.

Sharon Wallis, Head of Midwifery at UHNM, said of the go-live, “The delivery of the first phase of K2 maternity IT system was a really positive experience. The project team also includes IMT trainers/ IT and K2 providers all worked collaboratively and cohesively over the week to ensure that the system was working in all areas. The clinical project team consisted of midwives, a consultant obstetrician and project manager who have worked together with K2 for the past 18 months/ 2 years on developing an IT system which follows the pregnant woman’s journey form booking to post-natal discharge with the aim to be paper light by October 2017. The team have worked incredibly hard to make phase 1 a success and the availability and support from K2 has been fantastic. We are looking forward to phase 2 in October.”
The safe delivery of this latest project has been testament to the close working relationship that K2 and UHNM have had. This has been a large project that has required dedication and close collaboration between the two teams, and the smooth go-live and successful implementation is a demonstration of what can be achieved with a supplier and Trust working hand-in-hand.
This project, and the positive way in which Athena™ has been embraced, is a huge achievement for UHNM and K2 would like to thank them for their continued enthusiasm and hospitality. K2 look forward to working alongside them as they adopt the change and share with us in a joint vision of improving maternity healthcare for all.
