Trusts speak out about the benefits of Guardian™

    April 2013.
The UK has exceptionally high standards in maternity care; however, despite the dedication and extensive training undertaken by maternity clinicians, there are still a number of babies that are still-born, or who are born suffering from unnecessary neurological damage, as a result of asphyxia during birth each year. The resulting emotional costs to clinicians, families and the children affected are immeasurable; however, the subsequent financial costs to the NHS for litigation cases can be quantified, and the current costs for maternity claims alone stands at over £3.1 billion over a ten year period.

Now the UK market leader in Intrapartum electronic patient systems that embody key strategies to mitigate risk, the benefits that Guardian™ brings to the maternity sector are already being recognised by NHS Trusts across the UK. One such Trust to actively speak out about the benefits of Guardian™ is Chelsea & Westminster, who installed the system in their labour ward in August 2012. Speaking at a healthcare seminar in November last year, Dr Michael Anderson, Medical Director for the Trust, commented on the benefits that Guardian™ has already brought to his Trust. Originally purchased as a system to electronically record the CTG so that, in future, no claim would be admitted solely on the basis of a lost or faded CTG, Guardian™ has also been commended for its accessibility and traceability, and there are expectant hopes of what these solutions will mean in terms of patient safety and the reduction of litigation costs for the Trust.

K2 are confident that their maternity systems offer the complete risk management strategy and, as can be seen from the following article, Heath Trusts are also recognising the vital benefits that K2 Maternity Management solutions can bring.

K2's Paperless Maternity Vision Accords with the Health Secretary.

    January 2013.
Earlier this month Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, set the challenge to the health and social care sector to revolutionise their administrative procedures and become fully automated and paperless. Recognising that the demands of traditional, hospital wide, methods of data collection and sharing are failing the ever demanding needs of clinicians and patients alike, the push to encourage the NHS to move to a paperless strategy has now become a critical directive. The need to move away from a traditional paper copy to secure, accessible electronic patient notes is imperative and, with the deadline set to complete this culture change by 2018, the pressure is on for all NHS departments to move without delay towards full automation.

Maternity departments, like all health sectors, are demanding environments where the human interaction and care by clinicians will always be the first and foremost priority. Much time, however, is still being wasted by staff having to complete all the necessary observations and note-taking by hand, usually duplicating the same information multiple times, rather than spending this valuable time at the bedside. In this era of connective technologies, however, busy clinicians should no longer expect to have to duplicate data, handwrite copious amounts of notes or spend time trying to retrieve what are often inaccurate or incomplete patient records, and it is here that K2 is already well ahead of the game and is a forerunner in pushing Hunt's objectives to the top of the priority list.

K2MS Guardian™ and Athena™ maternity management systems are internationally renowned for their exceptional capabilities as invaluable monitoring and data collection solutions; however, the additional benefits of using these systems to capture full electronic patient notes are immense. The seamless integration of these systems captures the complete patient notes from initial booking, screening and investigations to labour, delivery and all observations through to postpartum care and care in the community. Linking to existing medical devises, Athena™ captures real time data contemporaneously and at the point of care into a single database. With no more handwritten records, no more paper records from labs and no single copy hand written notes, all patient information is available electronically in a single source. This fully compliant, accurate and paperless system is the only workable approach for future healthcare provision, and the benefits of effortless accessibility and traceability are immeasurable; both on the ward and at the point of reporting and auditing, especially for CNST and Payment by Results (PbR).

With K2's products already offering the ability to easily facilitate the Government's requirements for 2018, this step towards a paperless future should not be intimidating or overwhelming. K2 can help ensure that your maternity department moves easily and seamlessly to a paperless practice, across the entire pregnancy pathway, and benefits from the efficiency full automation will bring. To find out more about how K2 can help you join the paperless revolution contact us.

K2 Invited to Attend Meeting at No.10

    August 2012.
K2 were recently invited to attend a meeting at No.10 Downing Street to join discussions on how best to provide and promote online material for parents-to-be. An established Government Policy Unit is tasked with progressing a service launched earlier this year, that is currently going through a period of review, and K2 were invited to provide expert opinion on maternity information management.

The NHS Information Service to Parents was launched in May by David Cameron to provide online information to new parents, covering a wide range of issues relating to pregnancy, preparing for birth and looking after their baby.

K2 were able to provide invaluable advice and guidance and hope to be involved in further discussions in order to facilitate the wish of Government to make relevant information easily accessible to parents-to-be.

Paperless Presentations – A Great Success!

    July 2012.
K2's Robert Keith and Ian Crozier have just returned from presenting a series of extremely successful seminars promoting the essential benefits of K2's Guardian™ and Athena™ systems as a tool to reduce, de-clutter, streamline and even remove the hand written note from maternity care. A paperless environment is becoming increasingly essential in today's demanding clinical setting, and the benefits from a fully integrated and automated system can improve efficiency, communication and traceability immeasurably. In this generation of connective technology clinicians should no longer expect to have to duplicate data, handwrite copious amounts of notes and spend hours trying to retrieve what are often inaccurate or incomplete patient records. K2's vision is to provide a true electronic replacement of the hand written maternity record and use this new approach to ensure that the clinician – patient interaction is first and foremost.

K2MS Guardian™ and K2MS Athena™ are internationally renowned for their exceptional capabilities as invaluable monitoring and data collection solutions; however, the additional benefits of using these systems to capture full electronic patient notes are immense. The seamless integration of these systems captures patient notes across the whole of pregnancy from initial booking, screening, scanning and investigations to labour, delivery, neonatal intensive care and care in the community. Also linking to existing hospital medical devices, Athena™ captures real time data contemporaneously, and at the point of care, into a single seamless database. The benefits of this fully compliant, complete and accurate data can then be truly realised at the point of reporting and auditing. No more paper CTGs to be misplaced, fade or lost, no more paper partograms, no paper records from labs, no unreadable handwritten clinical notes and no fiddly plotting of vital signs and growth and fundal heights. This single database, containing the entire patient dataset, is available over secure internet via computer or mobile phone anywhere in the world, day or night, ensuring that all notes are available at the touch of a button to any professional requiring access. Accessibility and traceability has never been easier and the collation and organisation of data for audit and CNST requirements is now fast, efficient and stress free. An effortless and automated paperless environment is the only workable future for an effective and proficient hospital.
